With full hearts, IRIS is sad to say goodbye to a YES alumni far too soon.
Nerad Grace Mangai, 2012-13 YES alumna from Plateau State Nigeria, was killed in a car crash on February 21, 2016 in Indiana.
During her time as an exchange student, Nerad was placed in Bend, Oregon and is described as being very sociable and made friends easily. Following her YES exchange year, Nerad returned to the U.S. and was enrolled as a chemistry/biology major at Manchester University in North Manchester, Indiana.
This unexpected death has resulted in an outpouring of sentiments from our IRIS family. YES alumni wrote sincere condolences on Nerad’s Facebook wall after hearing of the news, including 2011-12 YES alumna Ochanya Okoh who wrote
“Nerad, its difficult to believe that you are really gone and your life was cut short by the recklessness of a drunk driver. Nerad you were beautiful inside and outside and you had a bright and great future ahead of you. It saddens my heart to know that you wont live to fulfill all your dreams, but in my prayers everyday I thank God for giving me the opportunity to have met someone as awesome as you,” Ochanya said.
2007-08 YES alumni Adams Garba wrote, “I’ll forever miss you, but your memories will be forever green in my heart,” and “2012-13 YES alumna Munira Abdul wrote, “Nerad was a good friend and such a bright girl, death is a destination we all share…you shall always be in our thoughts my dear, you shall be missed.”
Nerad touched many lives during her short time here. Our hearts and condolences go out Nerad’s family and friends.
