IRIS awards over $13,000 in scholarships and grants
IRIS will award a total of $13,471 in 2017 to the eight scholarship and four grant applicants. IRIS received 31 scholarship applications from seven countries this year totaling $30,495 in requests along with 11 grant applications from six countries totaling $22,029 in requests.
Two of the scholarship recipients were 2016 Bob and Judy Anderson Merit Scholars, both were selected for continued funding. The Bob and Judy Anderson Merit Scholarships are multi-year scholarships and are named in honor of the founders of IRIS, Bob and Judy Anderson.

2017 Bob and Judy Anderson Merit Scholarships are:
Said Abbas – Tanzania – YES alumnus 2011-2012 – scholarship will provide funds for his final two years of university; IRIS has been funding his education since 2015
Garba Munkaila – Nigeria – YES alumnus 2008-2009 – scholarship will provide funds for his final three years at a special university for deaf students; IRIS has been funding his education since 2016

Aliyu Abdussamad – Nigeria – YES alumnus 2014-2015 – IRIS will provide funds for his first year of university
Ummul-khair Aliyu – Nigeria – YES alumnae 2009-2010 – IRIS will provide funds for her third year of university
Ellyssahanna Espinosa – Philippines – YES alumnae 2013-2014 – IRIS will provide funds for her second year of university
Andi Jashari – Kosovo – YES alumnus 2015-2016 – IRIS will provide funds for his first year of university
Yussuf Mfaume Yussuf – Tanzania – YES alumnae 2009-2010 – IRIS will provide funds for his third year of university
2017 IRIS Alumni Global Grants ($4,993 total awarded)
Maya Petrova and the American-Bulgarian Library Exchange (ABLE) – Sofia, Bulgaria – ABLE alumni 2007 – IRIS will provide funds to establish a summer reading program and open air library program in Razgrad, Bulgaria
Hassani Bakari Msanga – Tanzania – YES alumnus 2008-2009 – IRIS will provide funds for an Emergency Medical Training program to nurses and medical attendant students at Same School of Nursing in Same District in Kilimanjaro region and Msimbazi Nurse and Medical Attendants Training School in Ilala-Dar es Salaam
Jesse Maikarfi – Nigeria – YES alumnus 2015-2016 – IRIS will provide funds for a project entitled “The Fight Against Unemployment,” teaching 50 unemployed youth through a 3-months job skills training program, including natural oil extraction, hair wigs, and shoe and bag making, in Kaduna State, Nigeria
Simon Zamani – Nigeria – YES alumnus 2015-2016 – IRIS will provide funds for a project entitled “English Language Literacy Program,” focused on a variety of English language education techniques targeting children age 5 – 15, as well as older generations in rural areas of Kaduna State, Nigeria
