Happy [Host] Father’s Day!
“Any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad.” — Anne Geddes
The same goes to the special men whom our students are most thankful for; their host fathers.
IRIS’s YES students will not get to celebrate Father’s Day with their host fathers as they have left the country for their homelands, but they have left special notes of appreciation for all that they have done for the students this past year; from opening their homes, their hearts, and their lives to a complete stranger.
From what the students have described about their host fathers, they sound like nothing short of real fathers to them.
My host dad was the most forgiving, most understanding and most loving father I would have ever met in my life, I will miss him a lot. – Ahmad (Jordan)
His stories are always interesting. Even though we didn’t get to do much together since he always feel left out because he is the only male in the family but it was great getting to know him. – Oumaima (Tunisia)
My host dad was always willing to put effort to my needs and curiosity. He always knew everything about Iowa and never made me feel like I don’t belong. – Natalie (Israel)
My host dad was my guide. He always explain new things to me, willing to help and keep me happy and Math skills P. S. He is a math teacher. – Jermaya (Egypt)
My favorite thing about him is that, he’s very encouraging and finds humor in everything. All the papers I wrote for workshops, he proofread and corrected those British words that I would always put.
I’m going to miss him teasing me all the time. – Esther (Nigeria)
My host dad is amazing, he is a very, very hard worker. He is kind and understanding. He always gives a helping hand and tries his best to make us happy. I love going on trips together, he always tell me lots of information about everything around us which cool. He is an excellent cook and I’m definitely going to miss his food and all the vacation and trips he took us on. – Mariam (Egypt)
My host dad is Mariam’s host dad too! I love him. He is hardworking. Fun to talk and he cares for us a lot. He always tries to help us. I learnt lots of things from him. My favorite thing is he is an excellent cook! I miss all of our trips, long ones or short ones; it’s always fun when we are together. – Çağan (Turkey)
