IRIS YES Students Participate in Winter Weatherization Challenge
IRIS YES students improved their teamwork skills and encouraged energy efficiency as they participated in the 7th Annual Winter Weatherization Challenge sponsored by the Story County Coalition for Energy Efficiency (SCCEE).
On November 2nd, thirteen IRIS YES students and three IRIS staff members worked with the Volunteer Center of Story County to weatherize homes in Ames, Iowa.
Students divided into three teams and went into homes to hang and seal window plastic to prevent drafts from coming through the windows.
The students were excited to help and learned what it took to prepare a home for a cold Iowa winter. Afzaur (India) noted there is “always an opportunity to help others.”
“Now I know people need help for the preparation of winter and I am proud of myself for doing this work,” Aziza (Tanzania) agreed.
The activity encouraged the YES students to work as a team. Mariam (Egypt) said the activity strengthened her teamwork skills, and Gideon (Nigeria) found teamwork to be fun.
“It was a great experience to work as agroup,” Afzaur affirmed.
And the teamwork paid off. IRIS YES students weatherized five homes in total.
As always, the students think about how they can apply what they learn in Iowa to their communities at home.
“[The Winter Weatherization Challenge] opened my mind to do this activity in Egypt. I haven’t thought about it before,” Mariam concluded.
IRIS YES students would not be able to participate in team building and community service opportunities like the Winter Weatherization Challenge without the support of their host families.
